Today i went to ssh into my Ubuntu 18.04 server from my windows 7 machine for some routine maintenance to find out xforwarding isnt working. In the ssh session, regardless of using putty or cygwin, if i type xeyes or xclock or any program really, instead of them being displayed in front of me on my windows 7 machine they are showing up on the ubuntu server.

Ive since purged ssh and openssh-client and reisntalled and reconfigured everything and restarted multiple times. Im not getting a display not found error, regardless if xming or VcXsrv is running.

Ive tried following the various basic tutorials for settings and these are what my configs look like after hours of banging my head on my desk. Ive been using xforwarding with putty/xming for years, and with cygwin/VcXsrv for the past year. Ive never had an issue like this in all this time.

Thanks for any help. If you need any more info ill try to get it as fast as i can.

Edit: as far as i know, there have been no changes or even updates to the ubuntu machine since my last login when this was working, i also installed all the updates from the software updater and apt upgrade to see if that would fix it. The only change in the windows 7 machine was one my my graphics cards in Sli blew a capacitor, so its a single gpu machine now. Not sure if any of that is relevant though.

Edit2: Ive tried purging and reinstalling xorg/xserver following https://www.computersnyou.com/4945/re-install-xorg-xserver-completely-ubuntu/ at the same time i also purged and reinstalled ssh xauth openssh-client/server and all the other associated packages. Without touching any of the ssh settings in either ssh_config or sshd_config, the server still accepts the xforwarding request and still displays the gui windows on the server. Im getting ready to just reformat my ssd and start over, loosing patience with this.

ssh_config

# This is the ssh client system-wide configuration file. See
# ssh_config(5) for more information. This file provides defaults for
# users, and the values can be changed in per-user configuration files
# or on the command line.

# Configuration data is parsed as follows:
# 1. command line options
# 2. user-specific file
# 3. system-wide file
# Any configuration value is only changed the first time it is set.
# Thus, host-specific definitions should be at the beginning of the
# configuration file, and defaults at the end.

# Site-wide defaults for some commonly used options. For a comprehensive
# list of available options, their meanings and defaults, please see the
# ssh_config(5) man page.

Wiped the ssd and reinstalled. Ran sudo apt-get install openssh-server. Sshed in without touching any config files and xforwarding just worked nearly out of the box.
