I was unable to connect to a network, after executing the command: sudo apt-get install --reinstall network-manager network-manager-gnome and rebooting made it possible to get connected to a known network.

However, browsing other networks via UI is still impossible because of a long list of disconnected ethernet networks shown. Note: By UI I mean the Wifi or Ethernet icon that appears in the top right part of the screen.
