In Xubuntu 16.04, getting a remote GUI session from a Windows XP was simple with remote desktop connection.
On 18.04, nothing worked until ~/.xsession was modified to have a single line as follows:
env -u SESSION_MANAGER -u DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS xfce4-session
Now, at least a remote session is possible but, it is necessary to perform the following steps:
1. Start a remote desktop connection, selecting the Xvnc protocol (it results in a moveable mouse but the screen is grey)
2. Using a putty session (or any other telnet), find the recently started xfce4-session process and kill it.
3. Start a remote desktop connection, selecting the Xorg protocol.

What can be done to make a remote desktop connection in a single step, such as it was in 16.04?
