I'm running Ubuntu 18.04, and the installation uses LVM. The partitions were automatically setup, with swap only getting 976 MiB. I decided to increase the partition size using the method here: how to modify size of swap with a lvm partition?

However, when I got to the lvresize step, I received an error: Insufficient free space: 1024 extents needed, but only 1 available. I don't fully understand the workings of LVM, and I'm unsure why I'm receiving this error. How do I go about resizing the swap partition? Am I supposed to shrink the Ubuntu partition first?

Edit: my partition layout

LV VG Attr LSize Pool Origin Data% Meta% Move Log Cpy%Sync Convert root ubuntu-vg -wi-ao---- 464.80g
swap_1 ubuntu-vg -wi-ao---- 976.00m

  • It depends and we cannot give you more advice without knowing the actual layout. Please edit your question and provide your lvm partitions? – Fabby Nov 1 '18 at 10:47
