I have a problem. The computer speakers work fine, but when I connect the headphones I can't hear anything. I have a Packard Bell EasyNote MZ35-F with Ubuntu 11.10 (kernel 3.0.0-16-generic).

Here is some info about my PC that may help find a solution:

Try alsamixer and turn up the volume for the Headphone slider. I've seen pulseaudio mute this setting way too often for me. Quit alsamixer by pressing esc

The answer regarding the headphones may be here at Ubuntu forums. This solution worked for me on my Packard Bell EasyNote MZ35-U-005.

Whilst this may theoretically answer the question, it would be preferable to include the essential parts of the answer here, and provide the link for reference
