I see how to put gmail messages in IMAP/Trash, but how do I archive it as if I were checking in the gmail website?

I would rather keep mail in case it becomes needed in the future, whereas I understand if I click Sylpheed's 'Delete the message' after a period of time it will become irrecoverable.
