  • how about after "sudo modprobe overlay" and "sudo modprobe aufs" – alfred Sep 14 at 12:51
  • modprobe: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod.c:514 lookup_builtin_file() could not open builtin file '/lib/modules/4.4.0-042stab129.1/modules.builtin.bin' modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'overlay': Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) – Rohit Bohara Sep 14 at 13:44
  • So you are not using Ubuntu's official kernel, it does not include overlay and aufs; see askubuntu.com/questions/856493 you are not the only one facing docker problem. It seems your virtual server is not a VM but a container. Can you add the output of "dpkg -l linux-image-*" into your post? – alfred Sep 14 at 14:33
  • @alfred dpkg -l linux-image-4.4.0-042stab129.1 dpkg-query: no packages found matching linux-image-4.4.0-042stab129.1 – Rohit Bohara Sep 14 at 14:52
  • Maybe "dpkg -l | grep linux-image" is better, it seems the shell expand "*". @Rohit – alfred Sep 14 at 14:55
