I'm having some issue understanding permissions on Ubuntu Server.

I want to give Apache2/PHP full access to a folder:

/var/www/marry/html

This works if I change the owner to the user under Apache runs (www-data):

chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/marry

But I also have proftpd, and now the "marry" user can't modify any files created by Apache/PHP and can't even create new files through FTP.

How would I grant these permissions to marry ? If I chown to marry, then Apache can't create files :|

  • Add marry to www-data group sudo usermod -aG www-data marry and a logout and in to get the changes to take effect – George Udosen Aug 30 '18 at 14:14
