I have the (seemingly) infamous black screen (lit but no image) on startup / after suspend issue. This is an Asus Zen UX21e...had 16.04 on it for 2 years with zero issues. upgraded to 18.04, black screen started happening; reverted to 16.04, issue didn't go away so I did a clean install of 18.04. I tried the nomodeset fix and it worked, but my resolution was stuck at 800x600. I can get the login screen to show up by starting the suspend process (either with the lid or the power button,) but sometimes I have to do this several times or even hard reset to get it going. Some info:

I've read every post I can find about this, but none of the fixes I have found work. I narrowed it down to:

I've been trying to solve this for weeks, but I am a linux beginner...please help!

P.S. I have found that using using 'xdiagnose' stops the black screen...it adds GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="drm.debug=0xe plymouth:debug" but startup takes longer and my dmesg is filled with 20 debug messages per second. I'd like to solve this without leaving it in debug mode all the time.
