I was troubleshooting a slow boot-up problem. I upgraded the kernel and the monitor resolution changed from 1920×1080 to 1280×1024. Under Display that is the only choice I have. I rolled back to the previous kernel, but nothing changed. Video card is AMD/ATI RS780L Radeon 3000.

I would like to go back to 1920x1080 resolution.

  • I want to go back to the resolution I had before (1920X1080) – Rich Dell Jun 1 '18 at 19:48

Please try to boot a kernel that was shipped in Canonical's default repositories for your Ubuntu release to see if the issue persists. You can select a different kernel to boot in the Grub boot menu. Custom kernels are not well tested and supported and most users are better of with Canonical's "official" kernel packages. – David Foerster Jun 1 '18 at 22:20
  • Ok, I assumed that what I had was an "official" kernel. How do I get the right one? Thanks – Rich Dell Jun 1 '18 at 22:36
  • It's installed by default. If you removed the kernel package(s) somehow you can reinstall them with sudo apt install linux-generic. If that doesn't work please add the output of that command and apt-cache policy linux-generic\* to your question. – David Foerster Jun 1 '18 at 22:39
  • Could you please review my edits and also review the editing help to improve the readability of your questions in the future... ;-) I agree with David: Go back to a supported kernel, but you seem to have a mixed 16.04 and 18.04 system: how did you end up like this? Do you have a system backup? – Fabby Jun 1 '18 at 23:29
