I have recently updated my Ubuntu 17.04 system to 18.04 with do-release-upgrade. It worked fine, but when I enter my password in GDM3, it is not accepted. But I set show text and the password is correct. It works with the VT, but not for the login manager. How does GDM3 validate a password? I thought it would use the /etc/shadow file like any other part of Linux?

  • Welcome to Ask Ubuntu! Could you please log into a virtual console (as you say you are able to), copy or upload /var/log/auth.log (you need sudo to read it), search the entry of last (failed) log-in attempt in it and edit your question to include that entry (replace your user name with something else if you want to)? Thanks. – David Foerster Jul 4 '18 at 10:29
