Recently my desktop crashed, and when I rebooted it was in low-graphics mode. That is, my resolution is low (1024 x 768) and I can only use one monitor. I have tried removing and reinstalling my NVIDIA drivers with

apt-get remove --purge nvidia*

and then

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-390

as well as separately:

sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

but I cannot seem to get out of this low graphics mode. When I try to use nvidia-smi, I get the error message:

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

Does anyone know a possible solution?
