Since I am using CUDA 9.1 on Ubuntu 18.04, I need to use gcc-6 as suggested here. To deal with 2 versions of gcc (Ubuntu 18.04 comes with gcc-7), I have adopted the update-alternatives method as described here.

I am now about to install mpicc - either with mpich or openmpi. Question is, how would I force my mpicc to be compatible with either gcc-6 or gcc-7 accordingly? Is there a way to do update-alternatives but applied to mpi packages?
