I have had to install the version as in the title since the harware was not up to scratch for desktop version ( an older computer ).

I after reasearch found this is the way to go after epic fail of ipcop, I have the two nic's in the old computer and a switch ready to go running at least three windows computers on Lan plus devices such as lan Foxtel, PS3, lan networked DVD player with Netflix etc.I just would like to at least have a hardware filter for the internet....

IP of my router is 192.168.0.1 , the present gateway corresponding ip's of devices up to not including 192.168.0.25 netmask 255.255.255.0

I would like not to use the ubuntu server as a dchp server, letting the router do its thing for the wifi aspect also.

Using the below link as a template, with my limited knowledge of linux, I need to confirm following changes to language code so to work.

Ubuntu 14.04 as a Gateway / Router and a Firewall

after: sudo vim /etc/network/interfaves

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0

iface eth0 inet static

address 192.168.0.2

netmask 255.255.225.0

gateway 192.168.0.1

auto eth1

iface eth1 inet static

address 192.168.0.3

netmask 255.255.255.0

gateway 192.168.0.1

then enable ip forwarding the same etc.

I know the above is not correct for the first part of configuring the lan since in 16.04.4 the eth0 and eth1 will be something different in this version. Please be gentle, as This is my first attempt with linux. I know there are improvements to this code and my terminoligies are wrong in many places.

  • I might give ipfire a try although it look simular to ipcop, I will try to configure it with static option for connection to internet as all devices will be on the same network – Dan.F.99 May 13 '18 at 8:49
