Trying to install nvidia driver for ubuntu Desktop 18.04 LTS following this link. Followed all the tips from the above link.

But some what confused in terms of: Whether I am using nvidia driver or nouveau? Whether i am using the right version of nvidia or not? I wanted to use the version 390.

I am having Nvidia GTX 1060 and using Ubuntu Linux Desktop 18.04 LTS.

lspci -k | grep -EA2 'VGA|3D'
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] (rev a1)
    Subsystem: Dell GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB]
    Kernel driver in use: nouveau

The above command shows that i am using nouveau

while the additional driver shows that i am using nvidia driver enter image description here

Don't know what to trust?

Edit1 Thanks Luis for your answer. Based on your comments when i am trying to install 396 driver...I am getting the following errors:

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-396

and then when

sudo apt install nvidia-settings
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
nvidia-settings is already the newest version (396.24-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1).
nvidia-settings set to manually installed.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.

Edit2 Tried this link Even the proprietary driver install from nvidia didn't worked. nouveau is very much stuck and not going out even when it's being listed in the blacklisted and tried to removed it.

Edit 3 Reinstall didn't solved the issue...seems that it's common bug as mentioned here

Edit 4 Tried these

sudo apt purge nvidia-390
sudo apt install nvidia-kernel-source-396
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-396

and then(added the nomodeset entry)

sudo vi /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"

After reboot when i issue this command:

lspci -k | grep -EA2 'VGA|3D'
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] (rev a1)
    Subsystem: Dell GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB]
Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia

But the issue is now I have much lower resolution - bigger fonts. How to fix that? What does this line means: Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia That it has all the 4 modules in the order it has been displayed? Current resolution is

xdpyinfo | awk '/dimensions/{print $2}'
800x600

With this change, Secondary monitor has stopped working now. xrandr

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected primary 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   800x600 75.00*

And it seems this is the maximum resolution that i can get based on the above output.

Edit5 Reverted back the grub nomodeset entry to have the normal resolution. After reboot and closely looking at the log files, this is what i have found(just the relevant lines)

Yes, it's fixed but how and when? I have no idea? Thanks everybody for your help and suggestions.

To kill the nouveau driver you could do the steps in the middle of this webpage starting with sudo su - adufray.com/blog/2018/06/02/nvidia-304-127-on-bionic and ending with reboot. This procedure worked for me when manually installing a driver. Jun 9, 2018 at 18:10

Glad you got it sorted! Jun 10, 2018 at 13:47
  • Ubuntu should probably warn users more directly -- if you have UEFI secure boot enabled, you can't install the proprietary NVIDIA drivers. Google UEFI secure boot and mokutil. Nov 20, 2018 at 4:57

To solve the error, Install nvidia-kernel-source before installing driver by following command:

 ~$ sudo apt install nvidia-kernel-source-396

then instal driver by this command:

 ~$ sudo apt install nvidia-driver-396

  • This one is good but i am still seeing nouveau kernel driver. lspci -k | grep -EA2 'VGA|3D' 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] (rev a1) Subsystem: Dell GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] Kernel driver in use: nouveau. How you fixed it?

for your specific case, follow this steps exactly to be able to use the latest nvidia with your specific Nvidia card. I am assuming you have internet:

  1. Add the Nvidia PPA

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

  2. On 18.04, you do not need to update the repositories. After you add a PPA, this is done automatically. After the update finishes, do this for your nvidia driver:

For Nvidia 390

    sudo apt install nvidia-driver-390

For Nvidia 396 (The one am using for the 1080 which also applies to your 1060)

    sudo apt install nvidia-driver-396

There is no need to install the nvidia-settings package since on 18.04, suggested and recommended packages are installed by default (at least to my knowledge) BUT in the case the nvidia-settings package does not get install then do

    sudo apt install nvidia-settings

Also if you want Vulkan, then simply:

    sudo apt install vulkan

After this, you can reboot the computer and you are done. Here is a screenshot of this steps working with a 1080 perfectly (Including Vulkan)

Thanks..getting the error while installing nvidia-driver-396

  • Hi @Ashu the error you mentioned is because you previously tried to install either another package for nvidia or a similar one. My recommendation is to install Ubuntu from scratch again instead of chasing into what happened there (To save you time of course). May 9, 2018 at 16:02
  • Hi @Luis - i didn't tried any other than nvidia-390...hate to install linux all over again...any other tip?

this issue happened on my Dell XPS 15 - 9560 laptop also(Nvidia 1050) which is totally fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS...i tried re-installing ubuntu 18.04...well it's not smooth...i have the delete the previous one manually and going thru all the painful process. Seems like ubuntu 18.04 is not that stable and there is a lot of pain for nividia drivers.

When I run sudo apt install nvidia-driver-396 I get The following packages have unmet dependencies: nvidia-driver-396 : Depends: libnvidia-gl-396 (= 396.54-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1) but it is not going to be installed Sep 11, 2018 at 19:16

Per this answer: https://askubuntu.com/a/1044501/254024

sudo apt purge 'nvidia.*'
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt install nvidia-390

Work like charm for me.

  • Purgeing the drivers always break everything for me. I get locked to 640x480 on my 4k monitor every time. Sep 3, 2018 at 21:22
  • sudo apt purge 'nvidia.*' << this will remove a lot things not only driver. For example cuda and so go on Dec 8, 2018 at 16:17

I had a similar issue that was resolved by updating the system (not sure if you missed that one), fixing a couple of issues involving broken upgrades (17.10 -> 18.04), adding said ppa, then updating again, then attempting the install.

So:

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt upgrade
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt upgrade
    sudo apt install nvidia-driver-396 libvulkan1

The key thing that stood out that something was awry was the fact that the packages were there supposedly but refusal to install. As I am much more familiar with the Red Hat Way (TM) of doing things, I took their approach and cleared out my apt cache, reran the update & upgrade commands, then reran the driver installation command, and voila, it worked.

And to clear out the cache:

    sudo apt auto-clean

So to fix your issue, what I would do is:

    sudo apt auto-clean
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt upgrade
    sudo apt install nvidia-driver-396 libvulkan1

In case it matters, I had a perfectly good install on 17.10 using whatever Canonical blessed as far as the nvidia proprietary drivers (386, I think). Did the upgrade, and have been hunting out the few issues I could find (popos repos are different now, lots of borked packages I had to remove, then install over again), re-enabling ppas, etc.

Not a bad upgrade, but carefully documenting what went awry and the proper resolutions. I really am far more comfortable with dnf/yum, and prefer it since in this case it would have rebuilt all metadata upon seeing the new repo. Oh well. Decent release nonetheless sofar. I am used to far worse than a minor hiccup :D

Good luck,
Andrew.

I had the same issue yesterday when upgrading to 18.04.

I had installed Nvidia 390 but I should've installed Nvidia 396. I simply removed the Nvidia 390 by the following command :

sudo apt purge nvidia-390

Then installing the driver which is recommended (the 396). Now, an issue that last for months is finally solved.

  • can you verify which driver is in use?

Make sure it isn't black-listed by running:

sudo grep nvidia /etc/modprobe.d/*
sudo grep nvidia /lib/modprobe.d/*

If that returns a line with blacklist nvidiafb, then that's ok, you can ignore that.

Running this for me showed a file that blacklisted nvidia. I removed that, and the nvidia drivers actually worked for one. This fixed it for me.
