I am running ubuntu 16.04 on the computer that I built with 2 identical monitors and a geforce gtx 1060 graphics card. It doesn't go to sleep if I stop using it so I turned off the monitors when I wasn't at it.

However, at some point, I turned the monitors on and the computer had frozen. Further testing showed that one of the monitors, when plugged in with displayport (which they both were) would freeze it and unplugging it would be fine again. I then started using HDMI for that monitor (my computer only has 1 HDMI port). However, then the problem reversed where the other monitor froze if I used display port with it, so I switched to using HDMI for that one and displayport for the original.

I updated my drivers to nvidia 390 and now if I use displayport, it doesn't freeze but it doesn't display either. Running xrandr gives:

xrandr: Output DP-2 is not disconnected but has no modes

It seems that it knows something is plugged in but can't see any available modes for it. I tried a new cable and cleaning both ends of the connection with compressed air, and at one point it did find the correct modes, however, it wouldn't output still and stopped after a short while.

Thanks in advance for any help
