I have a Lenovo X230 laptop with Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor nominally capable of a max output of 2560x1600@60Hz but found by various users to output 3440x1440@50Hz. I have a 3440x1440 Agon AON monitor connected by Displayport Mini (laptop out; xrandr calls this HDMI-1) to HDMI cable (monitor in) and the highest resolution available in Display is 1920x1080 which I'm on & works but leaves big black bars on the sides of the screen. I'm looking to add an option in Display to set resolution @ 3440x1440@50Hz.

Various solutions propose editing the xorg.conf file, or adding an xrandr line, however the xorg manual and other threads caution that xorg.conf no longer exists by default. My concern before trying anything is that much of this advice is now legacy and may be invalidated by updates in how xorg works. I'm tempted to try this approach, but don't know whether it's best to do so with external monitor unplugged, set as primary, set as secondary, or not do at all. Or try compiz settings? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Edit: I tried Settings Editor in lieu of compiz and can edit the resolution & refresh rate there & restart but it borks back to a much smaller res @ 60Hz: settingseditor
