I'm working on Dell Latitude 7480 laptop with Ubuntu 14.04. The current kernel version I'm using is v4.4.0.116-generic. The WiFi does not work at the moment. I followed the instructions given here- Intel WiFi Card Not Recognised in Ubuntu 16.04 and the WiFi did work briefly. But when I upgrade the kernel to v4.10 or v4.11 the system stops working but the WiFi connections are available. The WiFi does not work for v4.5.

The output of the network diagnosis script is given below-

Is there any driver I can install or upgrade the kernel to a version where WiFi does work but the system does not stop working?

0

I suggest that you download the .iso for Ubuntu 16.04.3 (or later) which includes kernel version 4.10.0-28 and which covers your 24fd device. You can find it here: http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/16.04.3/

Try the live session and once you find that everything including the wireless is working correctly, install it.

  • I need to use Ubuntu 14.04 due to work requirements. Is there any other solution? – Misha Mar 14 '18 at 14:23
  • Other than the method in your question and this, I know of no other method. You could troubleshoot why "the system stops working " when you install a 4.10 kernel. You could also get a cheap USB wireless or you could replace the shiny new Intel wireless card with an older supported device. – chili555 Mar 14 '18 at 14:48
  • I was able to resolve this by installing gdm and following the instructions given here- askubuntu.com/questions/760407/…. – Misha Mar 15 '18 at 12:43
