I just installed Ubuntu 17.10.1 on an old Dell E6500 laptop. When I attempt to boot it reports

/dev/sda2: clean, x files, x blocks

and then hangs.

Looking at kern.log I find ... (see the last 6 lines)

It looks like there's a network problem, yet I just installed 17.10.1 from the netboot mini.iso, and the network seemed fine then. I'm using a hard-wired ethernet.

If I press Esc during boot and boot the recovery mode, after many messages I get a Recovery Menu. There I select "resume normal boot", and the boot completes successfully, and I can login. However it's command line only, and there's no startx or gdm or other way (that I know of) to start X.

How can I get this to boot? Thank you!

  • can you include the output from journalctl -b | grep -i error? Mar 3, 2018 at 20:27
  • what does "hang" mean? From the logs it's evident, that the system is starting (correctly?). systemd is even saying "Reached target Multi-User System". What do you see on screen? If you do (CTLR-)ALT-Fx (that is press CTRL-ALT- (with or without CTRL) and any of the F1, F2, etc. keys) does that bring to to a terminal with a login or logs or such? Mar 3, 2018 at 22:21
  • When the boot is done there is a single message on the screen:

  • When the boot is done there is a single message on the screen: "/dev/sda2: clean, 58601/44572672 files, 3409564/718260480 blocks". That is the ONLY thing displayed! Testing ctl-alt-f1 through f6 finds a working login prompt using tty1 through tty6. Testing ctl-alt-f7 shows the above "clean" message. Testing ctl-alt-f8 through f12 don't seem to do anything. Logging in to tty6, it's clear there's no network. So I guess the questions are, why didn't X start, and what happened to the network?

  • Hi Tomáš, Thank you for your comments. I decided to quit fighting Ubuntu and installed Linux Mint. It works -- both the X server and network are working. I have no idea why Ubuntu didn't. If you'd like to propose your comment as an answer, I'd be glad to accept it. Thanks!
