Since updating to Ubuntu 17.10, Nautilus will no longer open VLC through double clicking on a media file, actually it seems spotty as best with double clicking to open most types of files, even when I associate media files with Parole it seems to not work consistently.

It will look as though the window is refreshing, my cursor will change to the loading cursor and nothing will happen.

Using Thunar and Nemo double clicking to open VLC works perfectly, however I don't like Thunar's lack of ease to search and Nemo wastes an insane amount of screen real estate for no reason.

I've seen another thread about it here however there's no actual solution that works in the thread.

At this point I don't know what else to do but re-install on 16.04 and lose all of my settings.

  • Have you set it as default application ? – An0n Feb 24 '18 at 18:46
  • @An0n Yes, of course. It was working perfectly fine before my version reached EOL and I had to update, and I've re-set it and cleared my VLC config and reinstalled everything many times over. – R. Donavan Feb 24 '18 at 18:57
