ubuntu 16.04.3 - when trying to do:

sudo apt-get update 

This is what I get:

Once the problem is resolved, run apt-get --fix-broken install to retry.

I had the same problem, most probably resulting from installing/testing/removing lots of software. I resolved it by purging and re-installing mysql-server.

apt-get purge mysql-common

Of course, take care of your mysql data before you purge it. I'm not sure wether your data would survive the above commandline. I didn't care about my data, because it was just rubbish I used for testing.

I needed to install mysql this way:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-the-latest-mysql-on-ubuntu-16-04

Works ok now.
