I have installed ubuntu server 16.04 on Intel NUC. I have manually installed pulseaudio. Audio output unfortunately only works for Analog output and not HDMI:

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC283 Analog [ALC283 Analog]
  Subdevicealex@gigabyte:~$s: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

but pacmd lists only one sink.

$ pacmd list-sinks
1 sink(s) available.

Manually playing sounds with

aplay -D hw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav or speaker-test -c 2 -r 48000 -D hw:0,3 does not deliver any sound over HDMI.

Any idea what I could try to get HDMI sound working?

  • I never had to manually install pulseaudio. Why did you do that?

    Check available card profiles with pacmd list-cards. You probably need to switch to another profile to get the sink available.
