I'm having a problem with my [USB] Wi-Fi connection in Ubuntu 14.04.4, it keeps dropping after every few minutes and I then need to restart my laptop to connect again. My phone connects well to the network so it shouldn't be a network issue.

I typed lshw -C network and received the following:

root@ninas-Lenovo-U31-70:/home/nina# lshw -C network

I also ran the following script

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info/raw/master/wireless-info && chmod +x wireless-info && ./wireless-info

It returns the following information.

What I see, is that your usb device is being used as your wlan0 - meaning it is using your USB to connect to the Wi-Fi. In your comments you said it didn't work? Then please remove it and let us get the internal one working.

*-network UNCLAIMED
   description: Network controller
   bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0

*-network
   description: Wireless interface
   physical id: 3
   bus info: usb@1:2
   logical name: wlan0

Let us restart your network, so it starts to use the internal one
sudo service network-manager restart or systemctl restart network-manager

Once you have a working connection we should start too troubleshoot, if you loose connection do:
dmesg | tail

Post those errors messages so we can see what whent wrong.

I gave you a command to display signal strength grep wlan0 /proc/net/wireless | awk '{ print int($3 * 100 / 70) }', the output was 54%. Does it also happen when you sit closer to the Wi-Fi accesspoint?

Can you maybe also output:
iwconfig
lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net

Network location:
/etc/network/interfaces

If you edit anything here, a ifdown wlan0 && ifup wlan0 is needed to let the settings take effect.

  • I unplugged the external adapter but ubuntu doesn't use the internal adapter at all, I never had a connection using the internal adapter under ubuntu. The signal strength goes up to almost 100 if I'm closer to the accesspoint.

  • I've run the script from the article you posted the link to and posted the output into my original post.
