Alright, so I was messing around with libssl and I manged to mess up libssl pretty well. It looks like I installed a separate version of libssl 64 than I've for libssl32 and now I can't use apt-get at all.

Output of sudo apt-get install -f:

$ sudo apt-get install -f

Go to software centre and search for mintupdate and remove it. I had to do this twice as the first time failed.

I then installed it again and the problem was fixed.

Environment: Ubuntu 12.04 server

In my case, after running sudo apt-get remove libssl1.0.0:i386, I was not able to reinstall it; dpkg complained about an error in the postinst script.

After some digging, I found that the following command was causing the problem:

/usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required

We temporarily added return 0 at the beginning of that script and libssl installed successfully.
