Using tee without the --append flag, I just managed to clear out my /etc/services file.

  1. Can someone send me their copy from Maverick?

  2. How to recover from silly mistakes like this on the command line?

I'd agree with Jorge but I can't say which package /etc/services comes from. It certainly doesn't seem like one that would be healthy to reinstall although I could be wrong.

Edit: /etc/services comes from the netbase package and gets customised by other services that install. You can find that out by running dlocate /etc/services (you need to install dlocate first).

So following my answer on the other thread, you could download the package manually and extract the file. Or "risk" it with sudo apt-get --reinstall --purge install netbase. I say risk only because the first method is just a lot safer.

For the sake of not making things worse, here's a services file from an "almost virgin" upgrade to Maverick:

# Network services, Internet style
#
# Note that it is presently the policy of IANA to assign a single well-known
# port number for both TCP and UDP; hence, officially ports have two entries
# even if the protocol doesn't support UDP operations.
#
# Updated from http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers and other
# sources like http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/etc/services .
# New ports will be added on request if they have been officially assigned
# by IANA and used in the real-world or are needed by a debian package.
# If you need a huge list of used numbers please install the nmap package.

  • Thanks! I didn't want to reboot my machine until I had replaced this file. :S

  • No, that's understandable. I've added a method showing how to find where a file comes from, and how to get a brand new, straight-from-the-package fresh copy of the file.

  • /etc/services is rarely modified (and not by any package, I think). It's mostly a repository of de jure or de facto name to port assignments for UDP and TCP services. Nov 16, 2010 at 23:18
  • @Gilles My desktop version was modified by the pipslite installer to add cbtd 35587/tcp... I thought that's why there's a # Local services section at the bottom.

  • I'm always adding stuff into /etc/services as xinetd requires it too.

The answers to this question should be able to help you out on how to get the file back and how to back up your /etc directory.

  • Which package would /etc/services be under..?

@tommed: You can find out by running dpkg -S /etc/services. Another way, if you've installed the dlocate package, is dlocate /etc/services (it's a little faster because it relies on a daily-regenerated index). Nov 16, 2010 at 23:18

You can simply run

sudo dpkg-reconfigure netbase

This might not work, e.g. if you have cleaned out your downloaded packages but it's worth a try. It worked for me

  • That might not be sufficient to restore the file. Mar 31, 2015 at 16:10
