Computer isn't playing audio. I've checked the hardware volume buttons, pavucontrol, and alsamixer. Nothing is muted. I've added the ppa sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev. I've also done killall pulseaudio.

However when I try mplayer I get:

[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: No such file or directory

(which indeed does not show up with ls) and no sound comes out. Youtube via chromium also makes no sound; so does Vimeo; so does vlc.

From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio try from gnome-terminal

$padsp mplayer /path/to/your/file

If it doesn't work build your own mplayer from svn snapshot

  1. Remove your mplayer
  2. Install a C toolchain
  3. Install yasm $sudo apt-get install yasm
  4. Install dev pulse $sudo apt-get install libpulse-dev
  5. Install git $sudo apt-get install git
  6. Download the mplayer snapshot from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/mplayer-checkout-snapshot.tar.bz2
  7. untar the snapshot
  8. from the mplayer source folder do a $./configure --enable-pulse
  9. then $make
  10. and finally do $sudo make install

Note before you do the step 8; you can play with configuration by doing $./configure --help to see those available configuration.

Oh and lastly ./configure and make might take time so grab some refreshment's and enjoy!!

Happy Hacking!!
