I updated another partition on the same computer. Kubuntu 14.04. In the process grub updated and took control back from the xubuntu install. NOW I get 1024x768. I cannot explain it. All is well now. Go xubuntu team!!! May 9, 2018 at 7:19

After trying many other answers that just give a black screen I found a solution in here.

Just create a xorg.conf in /etc/X11/

sudo leafpad /etc/X11/xorg.conf

with the following content

  Identifier "Generic Video Card"
    VendorName "Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]"
