After installing Ubuntu 17.10 I don't have sound and I don't see my devices on sound devices list (there is only one - Digital Output (S/PDIF)):

sound devices

I have proper installed sound drivers, and I hear sound when I execute:

aplay -D sysdefault /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Side_Right.wav

lspci -nnk | grep -A3 -Fe '[0403]':

What can I do to fix my problem?

  • @david-foerster thanks for response! I have added what you suggested. Everything was muted, but nothing changed when I turned sound on. Feb 18, 2018 at 11:00

  • I have already tried removing this directory, but after your comment I verified, that I don't have this directory at all. So I created empty ~/.pulse and restarted pulseaudio and I could hear sound! But after a while I went to settings and I saw only 1 devices (Digital Audio) that was unselected. When I clicked it I lost sound and I cannot unselect it again because it is only one device. Trick with removing and recreating ~/.pulse is not working now. Any new idea? Feb 18, 2018 at 17:09
  • Ok, I am able to do it again, but it is working for a while only (e.g. to moment when I go to system setting menu and then only one devices (Digital Audio) is selected). When I have sound I can see different (but still only one) sink: 0 alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo module-alsa-card.c s16le 2ch 44100Hz RUNNING Feb 18, 2018 at 17:18

Same problem, on ubuntu 16.04..... after clicking on launcher.parameters.sound and on 'output' I clicked something wrong, and impossible to go back....

You can try lo install the appli 'pavucontrol' native from pulseaudio, which must be also installed.. With 'pavucontrol' (named 'contrôle de volume' in French), after 'output peripheric', access 'configuration' and here you can select the good analogic input.. I don't understand why it works..... good luck!

  • Thanks, your workaround works! It is annoying but I don't see nothing better :) But still I cannot do anything in "Sound" menu in main Ubuntu settings window. Whenever I click there I lost my sound. But then your trick helps me :) Mar 6, 2018 at 21:26

I had this problem with previous versions of Ubuntu and Mint. If you open alsamixer as root ie. sudo alsamixer and right arrow along to the end you will probably find "auto-mute" - enabled. Press enter and change it to disabled. This was the 'simple' fix I spent HOURS trying to find... doesn't work unless you open as root.

Good luck.
