Try booting to memtest86+ and running it for a while. Also tell us what the "Settings" line says (may confirm the answer of @Fabby)

comment How to use Fixedsys in the Gnome Terminal, or wherever monospaced fonts are required
On the MacBook Pro I have to work with the sample image is not sharp. The Fixedsys font appears to have grey border pixels. AFAICT this is because of the so-called "retina" display, a high resolution display which causes images within HTML to be scaled by a factor of two (yes, they preferred to break HTML and to have blurred images...). The same scaling applies to the font itself, spoiling it. On the other hand, high resolution displays greatly enhance the legibility off all fonts, obviating the need of Fixedsys.

comment Can I make Tab auto-completion case-insensitive in the terminal?
In case there is more than one user, this changes it for all, which may or may not be the desired behavior

comment CanoScan Lide 120 on Ubuntu 14.04
It seems that the SANE driver might be working now. It is in the Untested state (here). Note that the Lide 220, which has a higher resolution and one more button has the driver in the Complete state.

@hexafraction, I know, and I knew when I wrote my comment. Good manners never time out, in my opinion.

@Benjamin, hexafraction correctly asked you to accept their answer by clicking on the checkmark to the left of it. This is part of the etiquette of this and similar websites.

comment How to connect mtp android device to ubuntu 13.10
I didn't need (on 14.04) neither mtp-tools nor mtpfs. What I needed was to log in to my phone! (Samsung GT-i8150 aka Galaxy W)

comment Problem with printing (hplip) in Ubuntu 14.04
If I remember well, I tried to use hp-setup (amongst others) to get my HP LaserJet 1020 to reliably print in 14.04, but had to give up and buy an HP LaserJet Professional P1102, which works flawlessly. (In case someone wonders why I didn't buy the wireless model: because I don't like electromagnetic pollution.)

PhpStorm 7.1 on 14.04 does not recognize the font I describe in my answer as being a monospaced font, I don't know why :-( Luckily, if you uncheck "show only monospaced fonts", you can still get it. For some reason the size must be either 15 or 16 (they look the same) instead of 12. PhpStorm seems to be a bit buggy to me...

comment nvidia-libopencl1-331 has to be removed before installing WINE
I followed this recipe out of despair, and it worked. I will upvote it only when I will have a clear understanding of all its "side effects", though.

comment How to print only even or odd pages (HP LaserJet 1018)
For printing pdf files with Document Viewer, the option in the Print dialog box is (as you said) in the Page Setup tab, and is called Only print, with values All sheets, Even sheets and Odd sheets
