comment Nautilus 3.6 - look for filenames in current directory before general search
@doug Sad face! Certainly the new search is superior at searching, but doesn't have the snappy performance of type ahead find. I suspect that an analysis of use cases and user experience would reveal that type ahead find was the more commonly intended operation.

comment How do I install Ubuntu onto a Macbook running OSX without a CD or USB of Ubuntu?
Basically you need to burn the .iso to a CD. Is there a reason why you specified "without a CD or USB"?

Ok, starting from your suggestion, I've eventually managed to restore windows booting... but it still goes to the old grub screen with the phantom Kubuntu! Now trying instructions here... and that works. Thankyou!

Thankyou, I gave this a try... Unfortunately I cannot seem to access the SSD from Windows Recovery Environment. I'll give it another try later without the other disk connected, maybe that will help.

comment How to prevent screen locking when lid is closed?
Cool solution. I'm having a look in my /etc/acpi/lid.sh at the moment, and I'm not sure which xscreensaver call to comment out - there's an -unthrottle, and a -deactivate. I tried typing 'xscreensaver --help' into command line to see what these do, but it told me that actually 'xscreensaver' is not installed - does that mean I have a different problem? I'm also on Ubuntu 12.04 Unity, but I guess it could be a laptop specific thing: I'm using a lenovo ThinkPad T420s.

Damn rep won't let me edit my own comment - just wanted to add that the solution proposed for the 640x480 problem in the question referenced above works fine, so don't let that hold you back.

This worked for me, but left me with 640x480 equivalent problem to askubuntu.com/questions/201123/…. Also, use Shift/Esc during boot to enter linux equivalent of 'safe mode' so that you can execute these commands
