comment What are the advantages and disadvantages of mounting various directories on separate partitions?
Also note that disks could be added to get more space, but in Unix you need somewhere to mount them instead of just assigning a drive letter. For instance if the disk ran full, a new disk was bought to hold /home and the current contents moved there.

comment What are the advantages and disadvantages of mounting various directories on separate partitions?
The historical reason of having /boot as a separate partition is from the days that harddisk was larger than the BIOS could handle so if the kernel was in the inaccessible part of the disk it could not be loaded. By putting the /boot partiton first on the disk it was ensured that the BIOS could always access the kernel so Linux could boot.

comment How can I improve overall system performance?
@hexafraction most typical machine configurations have much less RAM than disk space. SSD-disks while fast, are still much slower than memory access. An i7 has a max memory bandwith of 25,6 GB/s. ark.intel.com/products/75121/…

comment Fresh Install Ubuntu 14.04 Server Slow Boot due to failure to connect 169.254.169.254
The help text to dpkg-reconfigure in 14.04 mentions that the Ec2 service must be inside an EC2 instance or be slow on startup.

openjdk-8 is now in Utopic. bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-8/+bug/1341628 has been raised to backport to 14.04 as it is LTS:

@JohnMerlino there is a difference between getting the sources and compile them and go to the source. Which one do you mean?

comment How can I make a Triple boot
If you just want to try it, then consider installing it in a virtual machine under one of your already present operating systems. I have bad experiences in general with two or more operating systems on the same physical drive - it just takes a single disk utility that use the whole drive to mess everything up. One such example is the Windows Backup restore program, which wipes OS X when being restored into a boot cap partition.

@JohnMerlino my guess would be that the PPA allows for automatic updates when new versions are released.

Outlook and Internet Explorer usually. I would like Outlook to have its own icon, and Internet Explorer to have its own icon.

Unity makes a VMware window for each window open in the guest OS. Are you familiar with VMware and unity?
