I'm a geek who loves Linux. I do my best to help other Linux users, but oftentimes, I'm the one who needs help.

My personal favorite software:

  • Chromium
  • VLC
  • TrueCrypt
  • 7-Zip (or p7zip)

I've recently switched from Ubuntu to Arch Linux, and I'm absolutely loving it. I really appreciate the control it offers over your system - instead of trying to stop a user from installing software just because it doesn't have the "correct" license, it lets you decide what software you do or don't want on your system. (It's yours, after all.)

Firefox isn't supported? What? Try opening the terminal and typing sudo apt-get install firefox. If it's not available for PowerPC in the standard repos, though, then changing *buntu derivatives is not going to fix that. If you're feeling up to the task, you can try Googling "compile firefox debian", the second result (from HowtoForge) is rather useful...

Aww, bummer. What brand is it? I'll have to be sure not to order from them in the future... one last thing: try lsusb and see what you get.

@Zamphatta darn. I have to go, but try looking up how to use the command-line tool parted to create a new partition table on /dev/sdb. Try doing sudo parted /dev/sdb, then type mklabel msdos, then print and exit. Then reboot and see if GParted recognizes it.

comment How can Ubuntu detect some mobile devices that debian doesn't?
I suppose it may have something to do with Ubuntu's more lax approach to the whole "Free Software" topic. I'd be willing to bet that there's some proprietary driver that Ubuntu includes that allows it to access your device that Debian doesn't allow.

comment Ethernet not detected whatsoever
I can't log into chat for some reason, but sudo mii-tool -v says 10 Mbit, Full Duplex, No link. ifup says interface already configured, and the tray icon still says "Ethernet network | device not managed".
