I'm a geek who loves Linux. I do my best to help other Linux users, but oftentimes, I'm the one who needs help.

My personal favorite software:

  • Pale Moon (A Firefox fork with a purpose)
  • VLC (Good media player, easy-to-use but decently powerful)
  • XFCE (Desktop environment, decently lightweight but with a great user-experience)
  • 7-Zip (Archiving program with better compression)

I recommend Linux Mint XFCE edition, Ubuntu, or Xubuntu for those interested in getting started with Linux.

comment I can't upgrade to 12.10 Quantal Quetzal
No; like I said, my computer is deciding not to boot from USB. I did, after reinstalling 12.04, manage to upgrade to 12.10, though. (Because my computer messed up the first time I tried to upgrade to 12.10, I had to reinstall 12.04 again to get it to work. After 2 reinstalls and 12 hours of waiting, however, I got it to work. :)

Well, Windows is the king of drivers... Are you having any luck with the Xorg-edgers' drivers on 12.10? (12.10, Quantal Quetzal, is most definitely supported; they're already working on making drivers for the Raring Ringtail release.)

comment how to install ubuntu? step by step procedure from usb stick
Yeah, it's really handy that the installer can automatically partition your disk for you, should you decide to have a dual-boot. If my answer fixed your problem, please mark it as the accepted answer.

Try adding this to your /etc/fstab file anyway: /dev/sda1 /C ntfs-3g ro,defaults,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0 0 Then reboot and see what happens.

comment How do I create a .deb file?
My internet is too slow even to download it with wget before the Ubuntu One servers glitch up. Also, it gets really buggy when it tries to resume a download. Perhaps you could make a torrent? :)

The Quantal Quetzal release is too big to put on a CD, so a full reinstall isn't an option...

comment Is it possible to hide the “Copy To” and “Move To” context menus?
Wow, this answer was very, very helpful! I can now RULE THE WORLD! I HAVE INFINITE POWER!!! (Seriously, thanks. The ability to completely customize the context menus will be very handy.)

comment How do I create a .deb file?
Aha, I got a PPA set up. I'm still not having any luck making .deb's, but a PPA works almost as well.
