I'm a geek who loves Linux. I do my best to help other Linux users, but oftentimes, I'm the one who needs help.

My personal favorite software:

  • Chromium
  • VLC
  • TrueCrypt
  • 7-Zip (or p7zip)

I've recently switched from Ubuntu to Arch Linux, and I'm absolutely loving it. I really appreciate the control it offers over your system - instead of trying to stop a user from installing software just because it doesn't have the "correct" license, it lets you decide what software you do or don't want on your system. (It's yours, after all.)

comment How do I create a .deb file?
Aha, I got a PPA set up. I'm still not having any luck making .deb's, but a PPA works almost as well.

Hey, I'm having trouble with the download. The part of the video I got was really useful, but Ubuntu One's servers appear to be highly unstable. Do you have a MediaFire or Dropbox account? (P.S., LMK if you're going to get a Dropbox account. We both get an extra 1/4 Gig if I officially Refer you.)

comment How can I install Sun/Oracle's proprietary Java JDK 6/7/8 or JRE?
Thanks! Now I can finally use the Sun JVM! EDIT: crud, this breaks Minecraft on my 64-bit system. (Strange, considering that the specifically ask you to use Sun's JVM.) The launcher opens OK, but when I try to launch it, I get the Black Screen, even after deleting my ~/.minecraft/bin/ folder, and then updating. Running from the terminal, it gives me some gibberish about wrong ELF type, and that it's probably an architecture mismatch. (The official Java verifier on the Oracle site says everything's fine, though...)

gegls from outer space crashes something; the effect is the same as killing explorer.exe in Windows. I had to do CTRL-ALT-DELETE to get out. :(

comment How do I create a .deb file?
The whole point of me wanting the .deb file was so that I could ship it to my friends who don't currently have internet. I've already created a minecraft-installing shell script.

comment Minecraft: Modloader and Mods
Are you absolutely sure that you didn't try to mod the launcher? It can be confusing that there are 2 minecraft.jars, but remember that, as on Windows, you must mod the one in your bin folder. (Please tell me you didn't save the launcher there...)

So... you're already using OpenDns? Try a different one, then. Also, do you normally have internet trouble? (e.g., frequent connection errors when surfing the web, Wi-Fi is unstable, etc.
