comment Why can I not access imgur.com and gravatar.com from Ubuntu but can do so from Windows?
Worth a try. You didn't specify anything about where your OSes were. Separate machines, VMs etc- will have different MACs. My flatmates often rig the router with joke filters.

Maybe a filter on your router? One that only targets the IP/MAC of your Ubuntu machine.

comment wipe empty space with cat
In all likeliness, writing zeros once will be enough to hide the data. Writing all zeros will leave traces of the original data, similar to using an eraser to erase pencil. More info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_remanence

comment Ubuntu installed on the wrong partition
You can use a windows install CD to boot into recovery mode with the same effect of the windows backup partition. So the backup partition is not so vital.

It is more useful to ask individual questions separately (so people can find similar problems to their own easily): meta.stackexchange.com/questions/39223/…

comment Install/Remove Language show only English, no other choice
What Ubuntu version are you running? In 12.10, under language support, there is a "install/Remove Languages" option.

While I don't have any other solutions, sometimes when working with display settings, you have to log out and log back in for them to take effect.

comment PATH details different in different terminal windows
That is very strange. putting source inside the ~/.bashrc to include ~/.bashrc... paradox.

comment PATH details different in different terminal windows
I don't think you need source ~/.bashrc, as bashrc is executed by default.

gedit ~/.bashrc and add a line export VARIABLE-NAME=VALUE

comment terminal line height for nice “tree” ascii art display
I can't replicate the problem with tee using bash on Ubuntu 12.10 with the default system terminal. The lines appear joined.
