comment How do I enable desktop notifications, including audio, of when terminator is finished executing commands?
Sometimes I run install/update scripts, if I am informed when they are completed I don't have to constantly look at terminator to know when it's finished.

comment How do I change the desktop background in Cinnamon?
You may wish to read my question again as I've added extra details. I don't like using console as I don't know how to exit it and go back into the GUI. Plus while I'm in there I can't read your instructions.

I should mention the wallpaper I want was already in /usr/share/backgrounds.

Didn't work I'm afraid. Just froze everything up, which left me no choice but to reboot.

Don't you mean /usr/share/icons/*/apps/scalable?

comment How can I reduce the size of a SVG using software on Ubuntu?
Um, I just gave it a try on some SVGs I generated using MarvinSketch, a chemical structure editor and it didn't optimize it, so I'm guessing this optimization is based on the assumption the SVG was made in Inkscape. I have used Inkscape before, in fact I frequently use it to remove whitespace from these SVGs but I can't seem to get rid of certain info in the XML markup code that's unnecessary. Here's an example SVG in my Google Drive if you'd like something to test your methods with: goo.gl/PbnZgN.

If you have a command-line way of doing that using Inkscape, with minimal user input required (like I don't want to have to try half a dozen different compression methods/options to get the best results) that sounds acceptable as an answer to me :).

comment Does wget or any other http file downloader on Ubuntu support wild cards?
@Brace expansion. I don't want to download the tarballs for every MW version. I had the wildcard operator after the 1_25 (which refers to MW version 1.25, like 1_21 refers to 1.21 and so on), not after _ because the 25 refers to the MW version. I had the wildcard operator * just before the .tar.gz and not just after the underscore because I didn't want to manually look for what came after the 1_25 for the ~20 different extensions I wanted myself. In order to do it your way I'd have to go to the site and find the suffix everytime, which is exactly what I didn't want to do.

@Zeus77 I think I only have the one, namely the one I'm using as running uname -r gives: 3.19.0-20-generic.

My internet connection is fine, web pages load without a problem, downloading with wget (which I started long after I ran this command if you're wondering whether this could be what's slowing it) is working fine with >200 kB/s achieved easily, and up to 700 kB/s possible.

comment Is it possible to define website variables for git?
Just one last bit of customization I'd like to do, that I need some help with. I have that mw function cding to /var/lib/mediawiki/extensions before running, is there a way to get it to cd back to where it was before running the function?

comment Is it possible to define website variables for git?
I am by no means a bash expert so I'm curious as to how to create a variable that's provided at the command line that corresponds to the extension's name. I would like to be able to save these definitions in ~/.bashrc, if it makes a difference. Write up an answer, and at the very least I'll upvote it, but seeing how all I asked in my original question was answered in Oli's answer I'll probably accept his answer.

Because the Math.git part varies according to the extension I'm downloading.

comment How do I fix Ubuntu 15.04 when I cannot seem to boot it?
Um as I understand it that guide, section 2 (i.e., that entitled 2. Black/purple screen when you try to boot the LiveCD) is meant for those having trouble booting from live USB. I am having no issues with booting from live USB, it's my hard drive installation that's generating problems. I tried your solution, both with and without acpi=off and nolapic. I then logged out of the live session and rebooted from my hard drive and I experienced the same error again.

Just to be clear you mean to boot into my live USB and not into my hard drive?

comment Errors encountered when installing kubuntu on 15.04
Both give the same error: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these: The following packages have unmet dependencies. kde-telepathy : Depends: kde-telepathy-minimal (= 15.04.0-0ubuntu1~ubuntu15.04~ppa2) but it is not going to be installed E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

Thanks for the tip. Sadly, I deleted the others menu before I saw this comment. But I am still getting an error with my office menu. So I added it to my question.
