comment How do I restore Dolphin instead of Gwenview as default file manager
Many thanks,@Drac Noc. I had looked at File Associations and one or two other options in System Settings but these did not help. I had also tried uninstalling Gwenview but it reasserted itself as default on re-installation. This time, after re-installation, I went to Default Apps, changed the default from Dolphin to Gwenview and back again, and it seems to have got the message.

comment Can I free permissions on a USB drive?
Thanks Mike whatever for rewriting my question in a more logical order. I'm sorry about the history, but I don't know what info is needed by anyone kind enough to help me. Thanx Ilarsona, the drive is indeed NTFS which explains why the Mac will read and not write. I will get another drive for the Mac as space is short. I'd still like to know how to make any folder or device fully accessible to all in Linux.

comment Can I get further details on “Application has crashed” message
Thanks maggottbrain, the file apport.log.1 (which i will gladly share with anyone who's interested) refers to a problem with Nepomuk. There are also several apport.log.gz files, most though not all of whicn refer to the same problem. This seems to suggest that the problem is unconnected with my XP installation. Launchpad suggests that whoever is fixing Nepomuk bugs has enough on their plate, so I am inclined not to take further action, as the problem doesn't seem to cause me any problem. I have read the other sites and partly understand. Should I do anything more?
