comment rescue data from usb disk - don't want to format
To wrap this up: I have run out of ideas, I'm sending the USB stick to professionals. Thank you for your help.

Yes, I guess it is. I tried chkdsk a while back, didn't work either. I'm repeating myself :)

I tried the alcohol and it didn't help. Testdisk and photorec didn't work on Vista either. In the meantime I remembered when it stopped working: a couple of days ago windows updates were installing at shutdown, and the usb stick was still connected at the time. I waited until shutdown was complete to remove it, but that's the last time it worked. So before dissecting it I'm going to MS support first.

this is not an HDD, it's a USB stick. Do you have any pointers on how to go about rescuing the chipset? I'm still trying out the less risky solutions, but just in case I get to that point.

I will try that. I'll let you know how it goes. Takkat and @maythux thank you both for your time.

So you think it can't be recovered at all? I also tried e2fsck and it reports corrupt superblock.

I installed it, and tried it. The "Recover all files" is not active on this drive. Sector size, and partition size and type properties are missing.

ddrescue unfortunately reports >ddrescue: Can't open input file: No medium found PhotoRec doesn't detect my device either, just the hard disk
