comment How to set the default program to open a certain file type in a certain folder?
Never use .jpeg as an intermediate format! It incurs generation loss. Why don't you just save the images as .xcf, which is always automatically opened with GIMP?

@user230910: that would be (A && B) &.

comment How to install Ubuntu on an old laptop missing its built-in display
Good question. But... have you considered trashing that laptop and getting a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black to replace it? These single-board computers have gotten ridiculously cheap, and are beginning to rival older laptops performance-wise.

comment Beep in shell script not working?
Nice! I use export BEEP=/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/dialog-information.ogg and alias beep='paplay $BEEP --volume=32768' now, that works well for me. (Note that you can override the volume with the beep alias, e.g. beep --volume=15000 plays at volume of -12dB.)

comment Does Ubuntu work on a Raspberry Pi Zero?
Right, the most obvious difference between Ubuntu and Raspbian is that the former defaults to Unity, while Raspian comes with LXDE. I instead use XFCE on both my laptop (Xubuntu) and my rpi2, and this way both operating systems feel almost exactly the same even in graphical mode.

comment How to disable Alt-Scroll zoom in Xubuntu 14.04
This is the only acceptable answer. Unfortunately, the property doesn't seem available yet in Xfce 4.10.

comment How can I split an animated .gif file into its component frames?
It should be noted that (as of ImageMagick version 6.7.7) there seems to be some memory leak: do not attempt -coalesce with long .gif screencasts, it would probably consume all available memory and possibly hang your entire system.

comment Is it safe to install Ubuntu 12.04 alongside windows 7?
While I positively recommend co-installing Ubuntu to everyone with a Windows PC, I wouldn't call it “perfectly safe”. Yes, it usually works just fine if you don't get anything wrong – but wrong it can go easy enough! Indeed, the live CD (at least 14.04) has an option that will completely erase the HD, with all partitions, and not really warn you about it. Definitely make sure you have everything backed up (as you should of course always have, anyway!) before attempting this.

@A.B.: try echo 'bla' || echo 'blu'. It only prints bla.

comment Why is bash the default shell in most OS?
@Nagora: opinions vary. FWIW, you can always write Haskell with braces and semicolons instead of whitespace, and I suppose Python has similar fallbacks. Only, nobody does this, because indentation-based grouping is just amazing for readability.

comment How to launch the Calculator through Terminal
BTW, you should check out some alternatives to the simple Gnome calculator which run in the terminal. dc is the classic, and in some ways similar to a desktop calculator... but IMO that's not really good workflow; I'd recommend the REPL of a modern functional language like python or Haskell (ghci). Those can do anything a traditional calculator can, plus much, much more.

If you're very serious about this, check out some tiling window managers such as Xmonad or Awesome.

comment Microphone - static background noise suppression
This is a valid question, still I'd like to inquire: how about getting a decent microphone instead, so you don't get such amounts of noise in the first place? A bad microphone will always sound bad, IMO even worse when you use noise filtering than without.

Personal video, music etc. files are not big data.

comment Is there a simple text editor (like gedit) with options to make text bold?
Yeah, and while emacs is certainly more thoroughly customisable than almost any other editor, it's rather misleading to say it's easy to do this to a beginner.

comment Are there cases where vi is the only option?
I think this answer is actually not that bad (typewriter-like keyboards not a completely unlikely thing to encounter), but in fact that doesn't mean you need vi in particular. All older text editors have "backup" key combinations that allow you to work without arrow keys etc., though I daresay that vi is the only editor where you wouldn't miss the arrow keys.
