comment Microphone - static background noise suppression
This is a valid question, still I'd like to inquire: how about getting a decent microphone instead, so you don't get such amounts of noise in the first place? A bad microphone will always sound bad, IMO even worse when you use noise filtering than without.

comment split /home partition for program-created user-specifiec files and user created files?
Personal video, music etc. files are not big data.

comment Is there a simple text editor (like gedit) with options to make text bold?
Yeah, and while emacs is certainly more thoroughly customisable than almost any other editor, it's rather misleading to say it's easy to do this to a beginner.

I think this answer is actually not that bad (typewriter-like keyboards not a completely unlikely thing to encounter), but in fact that doesn't mean you need vi in particular. All older text editors have "backup" key combinations that allow you to work without arrow keys etc., though I daresay that vi is the only editor where you wouldn't miss the arrow keys.

comment how to delete line numbers in a code block?
...or sed 's/^[0-9]\+\s//g' script. OTOH, Useless Use Of Cat has something of a tradition. At least the < script alternative is IMO not so clever, because mistyping < for > will overwrite the file.

comment Is the command `sudo rm /Desktop/filename` safe?
@neon_overload: "trivial" is perhaps a bit too strong, but really – on a desktop, in doubt you just erase the root partition and re-install the entire OS, keeping only your personal stuff in the home partition. Costs a few hours; certainly trivial compared to when you've deleted a file you've been working on for months (in which case, of course, it's crazy not to have backups or at least try to restore the data – but I've heard it more than once that people ended up doing such work of months twice). — Of course, on a multi-user system / server, the balance can look quite different.

Though for a single-user desktop setup, really there's not much worse you can do with sudo you can't also do without. In fact, files you can only delete with sudo generally come straight from the distribution and are therefore trivial to restore, whereas user files will in the worst case be irretrievable (of course you should properly use version control and off-site backups, but way too many people don't). — Nevertheless: it's definitely a bad habit to throw in sudo just to get your sandwiches! Last time I dded over the wrong hard drive, I did hate myself...

comment How to download VLC?
Generally in a Linux OS, before manually downloading anything you should check if you can get it directly from the distribution.

comment Does Hard reboot damage my Ubuntu
...in particular with a Linux kernel running. Of course on Windows, I'm still quite familiar with the lovely feeling of a couple of BSODs in a single day, but kernel panics I've only experienced like... 5 times in total or something. Swap-caused almost-freezes are rather more common of course (hardly the OS's fault), but this isn't really a reason for hard-reset, is it? Normally still quite easy to top out the process or just killall it.

comment Building ghc 7.6.3 on Ubuntu 13.04 leads to error in DynFlags.hs
Mind, that did not get me through the entire building process... I eventually had to make more memory available anyway (via swap to external HD) when compiler/hsSyn/HsExpr.lhs wouldn't compile even in O0.
