revised nvidia-331 drivers gives black screen at startup
You need to quote that * or it will be expanded by the shell if there's a filename starting with "nvidia" in the current directory (or it won't work at all in csh, tcsh, zsh, fish, bash -O failglob).

It's zsh and all the shells derived from the Forsyth shell (nowadays that's mostly only pdksh and its derivatives) that do the right thing and don't expand . and .. here. All the other Bourne-like shells do (bash, Bourne, AT&T ksh, dash, yash...). In zsh, you'd use du -sch -- *(D) though, not du -sch -- * .*.

That fails to list files named like ..foo and may cause problems with files whose name starts with -. It could also fail if the arg list is too long. du -ahd1 would have none of those problems.

comment What is the Ubuntu equivalent of OSX `chmod -h` flag?
symlink permissions are meaningless on Linux. On systems where you can change them (with lchmod(2) or fchmodat(2)...), they do have a meaning (allow/deny readlink() (read) or path resolution through them (execute)). Write permissions usually don't though as you can't change the target of a symlink.

comment Why is it called sudo?
Also the default target user doesn't have to be root (though it makes sense for it to be or at least one with uid 0 and it generally is), see the runas_default in sudoers.

comment Reading package list takes forever
@fritzone, I remember seeing the problem reported elsewhere where people were saying that switching to a 64bit OS fixed the problem.
