comment How do I sudo a command in a script without being asked for a password?
-1 If this seems like a good idea, you'd be way better off just set a password on your root account and use z7sg's solution; that's just as easy, and doesn't create this very dangerous security issue.

comment Why did Ubuntu and Windows start hanging mysteriously after I took a vacation?
Another thing to check is if any of the fans have stopped working. A clogged up fan can result in inexplicable hangs.

comment How do I create and use keyboard shortcuts in a Gtk app that I am developing?
It looks good, although instead of passing in '1' as the arg to Gtk.AccelFlags, use one of the defined constants, shown at pygtk.org/docs/pygtk/…

Right, you need to create accelerators yourself; I've updated the example to show how.

It's not a function, that's just the name of whatever widget you're connecting the accelerator to. I've revised it to be clearer.

True, this may result in making it more difficult for people with real hangs to report them, but at least it'll stop the popups for people who aren't having hangs.

Apport is disabled in the release already, so this would have no effect afaik.

comment Laptop screen blank after login when external monitor is not connected
That would make sense but no, it should be just "DISPLAY=:0". It's possible to run more than one X-server at the same time, in which case each would have a different DISPLAY number for each server. But when you're running just one, as you do in an ordinary desktop, it's just display number 0, so DISPLAY=:0.

comment What should I do when Ubuntu freezes?
If your video driver is using kernel modesetting (KMS), it's unlikely this will be sufficient to fix lockups, you have to use sysrq or power cycle. (Go ahead and try C-A-B, it obviously can't hurt; it does work when an app (like compiz/unity) is stuck, rather than X itself, however other answers on this page would be better in this case). But when it doesn't work, now you know why. :-)

comment How can I get unity3d working with my gtx570?
Also, your /var/log/Xorg.0.log might shed some light on the situation. It sounds like your GLX module is loaded properly but it's possibly the log will show a revealing error message.

Ok, well I think /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p failing is likely why unity isn't starting up. A backtrace might give some clues (i.e. gdb /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test ; run -p ; bt full)

There's no need to disable nouveau; installing nvidia (via jockey-gtk or jockey-text for instance) should take care of setting things up properly. When you say the monitor is not "well recognized" what do you mean?

What does /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p say?

comment How to disable Alert volume from the command line?
It seems to me that a few releases back this could be controlled via gconf, but I didn't see anything with gconftool-2 or gconf-editor. There is also a pacmd utility for manipulating sound settings, which seems like it should be the right tool but I can't discern what sequence of commands would result in toggling that setting. (I tried running pacmd info before and after toggling the Alert mute and diffing the output, but didn't see anything relevant.)

I've actually already done that, but the Alert bell comes through the audio speakers via pulseaudio, not the on-board PC speaker (which I left unplugged in the case anyway).

comment Since that last kernel upgrade X uses too much RAM
Also, even with all visible GUI apps closed, there are still background apps you might not notice - things like indicators, settings daemons, panels, and the like. Really, you have to look through 'ps aux' or similar to see what exactly is running (look for stuff running as your username first).

Client memory leaks can be caused by even the tiniest applet. In fact larger apps like chrome tend to have better memory checking and testing tools so ironically are less likely to cause these kinds of memory issues.
