If it installs ok, you can ignore that error. I think the installer checks for that to detect previous installations. If it prevents you from installing the driver, then file a bug report.

Yes, if you do a system update it'll pull in all sorts of random bits from proposed. There are ways to pin it to just the driver (described elsewhere in askubuntu).

Both -304 and -310 should be there. If not, a) update, and b) scroll down in Additional Drivers. For Valve Steam games you likely do want -310.

To install in 12.04: sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback. Then log out, and select it from the login screen.
