Are you sure that this is specific to Ubuntu/Linux? It sounds more like a hardware issue. Try it out on Windows or OSX, and see if it's any different.

@landroni Indeed. Photorec is amazing if testdisk simply won't work. However, know that photrec will not recover your file names or directory structure.

@GertrudeMauzikowski You always want to make a backup of whatever you're recovering, and you should use testdisk to recover the files to a new partition on a separate disk so that you don't corrupt anythgin and you recover all you can.
