comment A file is cursed for the Dash
That's a good idea, but of course the Dash works by building a database, on the first search it could fail but once you access the files more times it should find it easier. I will try it in any case, I think the system should be mounted by a chroot or something and then I could play on finding the file.

The other one is more recent, original install was 13.10 and I've been upgrading since. I'm in the Ubuntu+1 team so I have both these systems now upgraded to 14.10.

I've only seent it happening with this particular file, that's why I say it's cursed. These are upgraded systems, but in the system where I'm having this problem this has happened forever, I think the original install was 11.10 and I've been upgrading since.

4) if I search in the Documents lens, sometimes (not always) the file is found, but after about a minute of waiting, 5) this is my desktop, i have a laptop complete syncronized with this computer (same files syncronized with unison, same Ubuntu version) where the file is found immediately when I enter a couple of letters of the name of the file in the Dash search.

Thanks @hazrpg. Just to clarify: 1) the file opens perfectly, there is nothing strange with it, just that the dash cannot find it, 2) unfortunately I can't share it, is a scan of some codes of my bank account, 3) if I enter in the dash the name of the folder where the file is located, the Dash finds the folder and it shows me the files in it, and there I can open the file without any problems,

comment System not checking for updates
As a matter of fact I have my laptop also with 13.04 and it is checking for updates without any issue, so it is something related to the system. I was asking just in any case anybody would know where to check or diagnose when the system is not checking. May be there is some daemon or something that should be running and it is not.

Finally this was sorted out as a problem related to having a "+" sign in the telephone field for the user profile, and is being worked out in the following bug report: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/985049

Thanks, I already had come out with the commenting of the lines myself as a workaround. I was reluctant to create a new account just because of this simple problem. What I don't understand is why in other systems where I use exactly the same username and more or less the same Ubuntu configuration I never see this problem, but never mind, this seems something that eventually will get fixed.

My username is "wgarcia". This happens in my desktop, in my laptop I use the same username and it works fine.
