Just to add a little more info, this fixed the reverse direction too (the server accessing other machines by hostname, which was also not working before).

comment Why isn't my monitor's native resolution appearing as an option?
Thanks for all the help, guys. Unfortunately, I think it's a lost cause on this machine. Even when I finally manage to get 1280x1024 added as an option, selecting it just errors out.

Update: I hadn't though to check in Synaptic to see if the driver was already installed. According to Synaptic, the driver is installed already.

Thanks. I found two suspicious lines in Xorg.0.log. (II) MGA(0): Not using default mode "1280x1024" (hsync out of range) (II) MGA(0): Not using mode "1280x1024" (no mode of this name) I don't see hsync being defined anywhere in my xorg.conf file. Should I be defining that somewhere?

Thanks. Your instructions for getting an xorg.conf file worked great. I had multiple SubSection "Display" sections (each with a different depth, and all with the additional element Viewport 0 0). I added Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "1280x1024" to all of them. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have done anything. I know it's reading this config file, as adding garbage to the top of it causes X to not load. However, I still only have 640x480 and 800x600, and xrandr still won't let me set 1280x1024 as my resolution.

I tried to install the driver from Matrox's website, but it's over four years old and immediately starts throwing errors when I run the installer. Is there any other place I should be looking for the installer?
