Only ever used this for various small firmware updates.

comment Simplest MTA mail setup for a desktop to receive (ana)cron emails
Thanks. I had read that, but it recommends postfix. Or nullmailer which relays mail to another server, which I don't need. Local delivery into a Maildir or mbox file is sufficient.

comment Why some windows in ubuntu 12.04 opens in background
This didn't fix it for me. For example Transmission, or KMahjongg always open behind any other open window. I'm using Unity-2D with 12.04LTS.

comment Is there a simple way to add exFAT support?
With Ubuntu 12.04, you only need points 1 to 3 (add ppa, update, install). Automount will work as usual.

Worked for me on 2013-06-28 for Ubuntu 12.04.

comment Extract icon from Mono executable
Unfortunately, it seems to only work with 32bit (or 16bit) .exe files. wrestool cannot find resources in 64bit .exe files.

comment How to add a “Show desktop” icon to the launcher?
The question already clearly says that the user knows about Ctrl-Super-D, but is looking for a launcher icon shortcut. So it's useless to just reply "I don't know".

comment How can I remove modem-manager from boot?
@Postadelmaga: Well, I guess it depends how your software connects to your phone. If you find you do need it after all, you can always re-install it with sudo apt-get install modemmanager, no?

This is not a direct reply to the question, but it is so crazy that it deserves an upvote anyway!

comment Which programs can I use to edit PDF files?
In Ubuntu 12.04: sudo apt-get install libreoffice-pdfimport.Worked very well for me indeed, allowing me to fill-in a pseudo-form (word-created form for humans, not a real pdf form) exactly at the right places by selecting the line of placeholder dots in the pdf. Better than a typewriter.

comment Where is the information about free space in a disk stored?
Note that obviously, df can only show info for mounted devices, since the info has to come from the filesystem.

comment Am I using Unity or Unity 2D?
While I admire the patience the author showed in detailing all these little differences, and even inserting screenshots, I believe the "correct" answer to the question is much simpler: echo $DESKTOP_SESSION, as user komputes mentioned.

comment Default mount options on auto-mounted NTFS partitions (how to add `noexec` and `fmask=0111`?)
Too bad this question was closed. I'm also looking for a way to force specific mount options for specifc automounted filesystems.

comment How to mount HFS+ drive and ignore permissions
@weberc2: ls -l /media/YourHFSdisk/ will show you the uid and gid of the current files/folders. The HFS+ disks I come across seem to be mostly owned by uid 99 and gid 99. However, I tried various combinations uid/gid/umask settings in the mount command, and it didn't seem to change anything.

comment Can I configure Alt-Tab to always switch applications?
It would be nice to have a solution which doesn't require installing the whole ccsm. It must be possible to change this behaviour with a dconf command or by editing some config file, no?

comment How to run a command within a time duration per min/sec?
The cron line is missing the minutes field. I guess it was meant to be " 0 1 * * * /path_to_script/script.sh ". Using {} without quotes will break on file names with spaces. Use "{}" instead. But anyway, doing a find and a cp every second for an hour doesn't look like the right solution to a (poorly explained) backup problem.

Also note that these bash files are only run when logging into a shell (through Terminal, ssh, etc.), not when logging into the GUI!

comment How do I start a script at login?
~/.profile (which also calls ~/.bashrc) is only executed when logging into a shell (through Terminal or SSH for example). Not when logging into the GUI.
