comment Can I map some key combination to the suspend function (it should also work for waking up the machine from the suspended state)?
It doesn't matter whether the keyboard is external or not. I've never heard of any feature that maps specific keys while a computer is suspended. The only feature I've seen is what I've described above: wake-up on any key press.

comment I uninstalled Compiz and now the Unity panels has disappeared
You have only described what you tried to fix your problem. You need to describe the actual problem in more detail, and anything you remember from before the problem began that might be related.

comment How can I make rm stop asking me for permission?
Just remember that if you break your system, you get to keep both pieces. You might want to switch to something like trash-cli to give yourself an undo button for deletion.

comment Picking a torrent application for a server
I've use TorrentFlux before. It's has a quite comprehensive feature set, but I recall it being harder to set up than transmission-daemon.

Another note with Transmission: you can use the Qt desktop client as a frontend to the server. Once you set it up, it looks just like you're running Transmission on your desktop, except that it's controlling the daemon on the server. Really slick.

comment Wanting to start development for Ubuntu (and most Linux distributions in general), which is suitable? Python or Vala?
Something no one else in this thread has suggested: you should learn Python because it is different from what you already know. It will expose you to a different way of thinking than what you learned when programming class assignments exclusively in C-like languages. Also, the syntax isn't that different. Try replacing { with : and then deleting all the } in some Java code, and it might start to look a lot more like Python.

comment I have a 32-bit machine, can I use programs that are meant for 64-bit processors?
I thought Qemu supported emulating 64-bit on 32-bit. I always assumed it would be in super-slow-motion though.

Don't forget the recently-released RStudio. They provide deb files for Ubuntu somewhere on the site.

comment Handle Doc/Docx Templates on a headless server to produce PDFs preferably without using OpenOffice.org
You haven't explained why you don't want to install openoffice.org. Obviously, you wouldn't want to install the GUI components, but are you so prejudiced against it that you can't allow a headless install?

I vaguely remember that you have to do something special to change the root fs mount options. But I can't remember at all what it was.

comment Tool to search for packages whose installed version does not match any version from a repository?
Cool. I realize that manually-downloaded debs and suchlike will also appear, but if I manually installed it, I can manually sift through it, so that's not a problem.
