@Rmano Thanks, with nethogs I identified that the culprit is a python script. I updated the question.

comment How do I get rid of this Anthy toolbar?
I had the same problem when updating to ubuntu 14.04 (with unity). For me it disappeared after unchecking these options and restarting Anthy. Setup - Ibus-Anthy is the name of the window, which is the preferences window for Anthy. If you managed to uncheck the boxes, I guess you found it. Can you check, whether the menu is still there after a reboot?

Looks promising, many thanks. rsync going once, going twice, ... Let's see if there are more suggestions.

I feel like this could be the answer to my question, but "Text Entry" only lists "Input sources", no matter what keyboard input method system (default, Ibus, none) I choose from "Language support". I can choose Anthy in "Text Entry" but it gives me Anthy not with my keyboard layout, but with something like US keyboard (although my hardware is German).

comment Workspace switch hot-keys not working in 13.04 (but expo does)
I tried to reset the hotkeys, just to be sure. Compiz had <Ctrl><Alt>Left. Trying to reset, compiz interpreted my Ctrl key as being <Primary>. In any case, changing all <Ctrl> instances to <Primary> didn't work either, but it might be a hint as to what went wrong. Did you file a bug report?

I bought a 6200 card instead, which works. Thanks for your help. So, X121e users: beware of the 6205 card, it doesn't work (for me).

Same thing. The computer hangs with black screen before getting to the BIOS.

I see. I might just need to try to use a N6200 card rather than the N6205 card... I didn't mess with any drivers, I can't even get any drivers (or BIOS or anything) to load with a different card plugged in.

Thanks. Let's see what happens when I drill out the old card.

I'll need to drill out the old card and I don't have the tools for that at the moment. Would it be too much to ask (if you still have your old card) to plug in your old card and see whether your computer, too, doesn't even get to the BIOS?

comment How to get a stable WLAN-connection with a Lenovo x121e?
Thanks. I'll have to find some tools for that, then. Curious that a WWAN card is allowed to go there, but a WiFi card doesn't even make it to the BIOS...

The BIOS didn't complain, I don't even get to the BIOS. (I posted my problem in the link above.) The computer is on, the screen is black, the fan is turning, but nothing is happening... I have an AMD model as well. Maybe I need to buy the 6200 instead?

I tried the same thing with an Intel Centrino 6205 card without any success. Do you have the AMD or the Intel model? What version is your BIOS?

@clemej Yes, the slot is intended for PCIe WWAN cards.

Hm... more productive to troubleshoot a bad card than to try to get working a brand new wireless card. That doesn't sound very hopeful. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Someone used a Intel Centrino 6200 without any problems (post linked both in my question and the above comment), although it is not listed on the page you linked to...

I tried the spare slot with pin 20 taped over (I only have ordinary sello tape atm), but still the computer doesn't turn on. That is, I don't even get an error: The computer is on, the fan turns, but I can't even get to the BIOS.

Thanks. I chose the card because a very similar model had been used without any problems by someone in this post.
