comment wpa_supplicant ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument
Exactly same problem here on a ThinkPad T61 with iwl3945 - When I boot into Arch, connection works flawlessly with the commands described. In Ubuntu I had to do apt-get remove network-manager (Thanks, @PetrPudlák). It's now possible to connect, but I still experience frequent and seemingly random disconnects.

comment What's wrong with my cron.hourly configuration?
Actually, it's good practice to keep things centralized by (solely) using the /etc/crontab. Doing so also keeps your jobs separate from the automatically added jobs in the /etc/cron.* directories.
