comment How to start GUI from command line?
This brings up a background image, and if I right click I get a menu containing "New Folder" , "New Document" etc but nothing useful. I don't get any kind of usable desktop, no dock, not menu bar, nothing.

comment Message “Sparse file not allowed” after installing on a btrfs filesystem
Strangely enough, commenting this out does NOT fix the problem, but it at least prevents the machine from hanging at the "press any key" prompt... I can at least boot now.

comment How do I open a terminal?
interestingly i tried searching for "prompt", "command prompt", "shell", and "bash" and of course none of those was useful.

On my system, hitting any key does nothing, it's stuck!

comment Can I install Ubuntu to my 32 GB USB pen drive?
Do not be surprised if your Usb installation takes 3 or 4 minutes to fully boot. My live USB drive takes about 30 seconds to boot, should I expect the full installation to take signficantly longer than that assuming similar flash speeds? That is, is this warning based on USB speed, or additional boot items in a full install versus a life install?

How do you fsck the drive if you are booted off it? I don't get an option to boot without persistance.

I am rather surprised that firefox would run a shell to grep "netscape" from the process list.

comment How Do I interpret HDD S.M.A.R.T Results?
I should also add that the test results themselves are ambiguous. The overall test says that it failed, but the read error rate test, despite having a ridiculous value (100/100, worst, normalized) says "Ok".

comment How Do I interpret HDD S.M.A.R.T Results?
I've got a drive that is pretty much only failing the raw read error rate. The test only fails after the drive has been running a while, maybe 15 minutes; under Windows the symptom is that any drive access hangs the process, so I am using Ubuntu tools to determine what is wrong, but I'm at a loss as to what it is saying is wrong with the drive, since read error rate doesn't seem to indicate any kind of imminent failure of the drive - yet the drive definitely has problems!
